A well-stocked pantry

With the economy taking a ride on a massive roller coaster right now, do what you can to keep your costs under control. Start with your food budget. A stocked pantry allows you to cook at home which saves a lot of money. You also have the peace of mind that should the need arise; you have several weeks worth of food available to your family.

I have followed the ‘twin’ rule when stocking our pantry for years. I make sure to have 2 of everything.
Why?
1. Easier meal planning
2. I can purchase things when they are on sale instead of waiting until we are out (and having to pay full price)


Your pantry needs may vary but this is the typical list I keep on our pantry door.

Canned beans

Rice**

Flour**

cornmeal

Sugar (brown, powdered and white)

Cocoa powder

Baking soda*

Baking powder

Canned veggies (think nutrition merit when choosing…green beans beat corn)

Canned fruit (again, look at the labels)

Broth

Soups

Pasta

Nuts**

Tomato products

Evaporated milk

Peanut butter

Jelly

Honey

Tea/coffee

Bottled water

Oatmeal

Cream of wheat

Cereal

Jello

Seasonings

Canned fish/chicken

Crackers

Popcorn

Oils

Sauces/dressings

Salt*

Vinegar*

Potato flakes

Powdered milk

Potatoes/onions/garlic/squash (all will do well in a cool/dry location for extended period)



*These items can do several things around the house when it comes to cleaning and/or preservation.

**Items like flour, sugar and nuts can be purchased in bulk and stored in the freezer for even longer shelf life.

I do not cook with powdered milk or potato flakes but I keep them the pantry for ‘just in case’ items. The same for canned veggies (we prefer fresh or frozen). To eliminate waste, I keep an eye on the expiration date. If it is drawing near, and I have not opened the item, I donate it to the church food pantry. Which leads me to another idea – keep a Sharpie marker in your pantry. When you bring items in from the market; write the expiration date on the top of it for easy viewing. Remember to rotate oldest to newest on the shelf.

Make sure you keep a manual can opener tucked away for emergencies. If you lose power, you will be happy to have it! Along the same line, think about storing extra propane tanks for your grill or camping stove. If you lose the ability to use your kitchen appliances, the propane will allow you to cook for your family.
